2. MGM’s Leo Debut

When and where: 1927, California

Leo the Lion, the iconic MGM mascot, actually started out with Goldwyn Pictures before MGM took over. Check out this pic of Leo—he’s either striking a pose or mid-roar for a video.

Back in 1916, Howard Dietz picked Leo to represent his alma mater, Columbia University. The lion, dubbed “Slats,” hailed from the Dublin Zoo and got his training from Volney Phifer.
