40 Servicewomen, 40 Countries: A Globe-Trotting Tour of Women in Uniform

Romania: The Spirit of Ecaterina, Still Marching

Romania: The Spirit of Ecaterina, Still Marching

Cross the continent to Romania – a country of Carpathian peaks, medieval fortresses, and a national character forged across centuries of occupation and resistance. Romanian women have a reputation for delicate features that can be deceptive; beneath that elegance sits a steeliness with deep historical roots. The country’s most celebrated female warrior, Ecaterina Teodoroiu, lost all four of her brothers in World War I, served as an army nurse, then picked up a rifle and fought until she was killed in action. That story is taught in Romanian schools and carried quietly by every woman who follows her into uniform. The soldier photographed here has those same almond-shaped eyes, that same composed bearing – a face that tells you nothing about what it would cost to stand against her.
