21. Namib Dunes – Namibia

The stunning red sand dunes near Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert of Namibia in south-west Africa. They form in star shapes because the way the wind blows the sand from all directions. The sand itself is over five million years old with the red color coming from the iron oxide in the particles. Many of the dunes can be, and are, climbed by tourists. Do it early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day, it is well worth the experience as the sun rises, and the fun of the descent!
